I've seen that issue discussed by the dev team, though I'm not sure what will become of it.  With the large number of columns being displayed there's got to be an expectation of a minimum width, though what that may end up being I'm not sure.  I know that the idea of reducing the font size was frowned upon.

When I first started running forums I wanted to install everything in the world, and then little by little I've weeded my "needs" down to five or six mods.  It sure makes life easier when it's time to upgrade.

Good news!  I used to fret over mods conflicting with each other, but lately I've just gone in and started uninstalling things until the mod I'm installing goes in happy, and then reinstall the other stuff.  There's usually a pattern where things will coexist.  Just remember if you've got a ton of mods that it might be a good idea to keep track of the order in which they're installed so you can always get them back out. 

Easiest thing to do is to uninstall one of the other mods and see if that makes a difference.  Most mods can be uninstalled and reinstalled without skipping a beat as far as their own data goes.

Hard to understand why it can't find a simple commented line.  In my experience mods tend to leave those alone.

In SimplePortal I can create new "pages" where I can put any blocks I like.  "Pages" don't show up on the menu, but they are accessible through the URL.  You could simply allow the user to enter the URL of the "Welcome" page, and then feed them there by creating one new menu item.  It might be an easier way than developing our own portal page, though I'm unclear if that was your meaning.

Either a front page that we provide, or a method for accommodating portal programs.  I'd be up for some extensive testing with SimplePortal, which is the only portal I've ever used.

I have no portal preferences myself... the person who introduced me to SMF used SimplePortal, and so I have a familiarity with it.

I'm not entirely sure what you'd use SD in standalone mode with a portal for...

In stand alone mode it would be nice to have a "Welcome to the HelpDesk" portal page, where you could provide specific information for the client.  Rules, policies, procedures, links, etc.

I had (Kind Of) done this on a test forum I setup by showing a SimplePortal top block using the -~action|helpdesk modifier in SimplePortal, which tells the block to NOT show if is sees action=helpdesk on the URL.  So the block would show up THE FIRST time you arrive at the helpdesk, but as soon as you do anything it goes away.  So it acts as a kind of welcome screen.

To see the block again you can remove the action=helpdesk from the URL, or click on the forum logo, which does the same thing.

I've had the same issue before when running my browser too narrow.  See attachment.

First thing is that you need to "Activate" SimpleDesk by going to Admin/Configuration/Core Features.  Down near the bottom is SimpleDesk.  A link is provided to that at the end of the SimpleDesk install process, but it's easy to miss.

Then, the meat and potatoes of what you need to do is to go to Admin/Members/Permissions and setup the many permissions for SimpleDesk.  Initially the only user who sees the HelpDesk menu will be admins.

Note that there are THREE different sections of permissions related to SimpleDesk.  One is for general users items, another is for helpdesk staff, and the last is for helpdesk administration.

I do think it's MUCH better than it was at RC1.  I have a lot of confidence that it would be OK to store important data in there now.  It seems that now the most nagging issues are going to be small graphical quirks between browsers,  which are not show stoppers.

Barring any new major bugs I think we can skip the RC3 step

Uh oh, I'd better get digging.  It's my job to never let it get out of RC.   

I think things are getting pretty close.  There was a couple of bad ones that we found after the RC1 candidate was released which caused delays.  Some of the trouble was related to different behavior in different browsers.  But it looks like after a few nights of sleep deprivation, Arantor has it ironed out nicely.   

Ceiling cat scared the crap out of me this morning.  I had just woken up, sat down and came here to see if anything interesting had happened overnight.  I had looked away from the PC screen to get logged into my laptop, when out of the corner of my eye I saw this "thing" on my screen, but before I got a good look at it, it was gone.    For a second I thought I was pwned!
